THE FUTURE IS HISTORY : THE BIRTH OF ZE RECORDS
ZE records was created in 1978 in New York by English Michael Zilkha, (Z), and French Michel Esteban (E). Michael Zilkha was raise in England and graduated with an MA from Lincoln College, Oxford University, in 1975. From 75 to 78 he worked in publishing was living in New York and and collabored to the cultural theatre pages for the newspaper « Village Voice ».

Michel Esteban studied Art, at the Art graphic school of Paris, then at Milton Glazer’s School of Visual Arts in New York. Returning from N.Y in 1975, after a several months journey « à la Kerouak » through the United States, he opened in center Paris the first parisian concept store « Harry Cover », a shop specialized in records imports from England and USA and rock merchandising, particularly Rock Icons Tee Shirts, books and magazines. The basement shop quickly became the rehearsal place for Parisian new wave bands and the shop the epicenter of the Parisian Hype. Between 1975 and 1976, Esteban published « Rock News », the first «Punk » magazine, which covered the birth of the movement in London, New York and secondarily Paris. Esteban published in 1977 Patti Smith’s « Witt » and « The Night », two poetry and pictures books, and Lizzy Mercier Descloux first book « Desiderata ».

When Esteban went into music producing and signed French new wave band « Marie et Les Garcons » in 77, he asked John Cale to produce the single. Cale who had been introduced to him by friend Patti Smith when he was producing « Horses », Patti’s first album. John Cale produced cult French single « Re Bop » in N.Y and when he decided to start a record label with Jane Friedman (John and Patti’s manager) he called upon Esteban. Several months later Cale introduced Michael Zilkha to him. « Marie et Les Garcons » single was originally released on SPY, as various singles all produced by John Cale, of which : Harry Toledo, The Necessaries, the pope of Rockcritics: Lester Bangs, Model Citizens and Bob Dylan’s black eminence Bobby Neuwrith.

This collaboration at four lasted several months, then Zilkha and Esteban, decided to start their own label and left to create ZE records. After the late 70’ new wave and punk explosion, a new bunch wannabe musicians often writers, painters, movie-makers, drifters met and created a deviant musical scene that rejuected the traditional way of music business and ZE provided a crazy cocoon and lab for this urban tribe to explore, search & destroy. A year later Chris «Tycoon » Blackwell joined in and throught a licence deal with his major indie label Island records gave ZE a worldwide exposure.

ZE during a few years developed an independent and surrealist entity with a very particular esthetic line, a chaotic but coherent universe, refuge of all the Arty New York underground scene and the strong individualities which composed it. For some people at that time, ZE was simply « the best independant records label in the world » dixit John Pell in « Melody Maker » 1980. In « THE FACE », Robert Elms wrote in the Mars 1981 issue : «The most sane part of advice that this Young scribe edge offer at present is this - IF IT’S ONE ZE BUY IT » and in the same magazine in January 82, Paul Tickell called the label : « ZE Records the world¹s most fashionable label in the world.» The rest is history...

In a couple of years the best albums of Suicide, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Lydia Lunch, Alan Vega, James White/Chance, Cristina, Lizzy Mercier Descloux , Was (Not Was), to only name the most famoust, were recorded on ZE at the hinge of the 70/80’s and influenced until today a great number of bands.

In 1982 Esteban left New York and ZE records for others solo adventures. From1984 to 1989, he produced the French group new wave « Octobe »,the South-African album of Lizzy Mercier Descloux including, against all odds, the hit « Mais où Sont Passées Les Gazelles », and its following in Brazil « One For The Soul » with Chet Baker. Then two albums with Lio : « Pop Model » and « Cancan », including two gold single with « Les Brunes Comptent Pas Pour Des Prunes » and « Fallait Pas Commencer » and a Gold album with « Pop Model »...

Michael Zilkha stopped ZE Records in 1984, after a few years in the oil business, he is running today Renewable Energy. It sits at the office of monitoring of Chinquapin School, The Menil Collection, The Contemporary Arts Museum and The Alley Theatre, all domiciled in Houston, Texas, where he actually lives…
In 2003, Esteban relaunched ZE records which to date has remasterised and released more than forty albums produced since 1978. He lives today in Bahia, Brazil.

ZE Records fut créé en 1978 à New York par l'Anglais Michael Zilkha (Z), et le Français Michel Esteban (E). Michael Zilkha, été élevé en Angleterre où il fit de brillantes études couronnées par un diplôme du Lincoln Collège, Oxford University, en 1975. Il quitta Londres pour New York pour travailler dans l'édition, et écrivait dans les pages culturelles théâtrales du journal « Village Voice ».

Michel Esteban a étudié l'art, aux Arts Graphiques de Paris, puis au Milton Glazer's School of Visual Arts de New York. En 1975, après un périple de plusieurs mois "à la Kerouac" à travers les États-Unis, il ouvre dans le centre de Paris « Harry Cover », la première « concep store » parisienne, boutique spécialisée dans les disques imports anglais et Américains, et dans le merchandising rock, particulièrement les T-shirts à l'effigie des icônes du rock, livres et magazines internationaux. Le sous-sol de la boutique devient vite la salle de répétition des groupes parisiens new wave, et la boutique elle-même, l'épicentre de la hype parisienne.

Entre 1975 et 1976, Esteban publia « Rock News », le premier magazine « Punk », qui couvrira la naissance du mouvement à Londres, New York, et plus tard Paris. Il publia en 1977 trois livres de poésie « Witt », « The Night», de Patti Smith, et « Desiderata » de Lizzy Mercier Descloux.

Lorsque Esteban fit ses premiers pas dans le music business en produisant le groupe français new wave « Marie et Les Garçons » en 1977, il demanda à John Cale de réaliser la production du single. Ils s'étaient rencontrés par l'intermédiaire de leur amie commune Patti Smith alors que Cale produisait « Horses », le premier album de Patti. John Cale produisit donc à New York le premier single « Re Bop » (devenu culte) du groupe, et quand il décida de monter son propre label indépendant avec Jane Friedman (le manager de John et Patti), il fit appel à Esteban et lui présenta quelques mois plus tard Michael Zilkha. Esteban et Zilkha, depuis longtemps tous deux grands fans du Velvet Underground participèrent à la création avec Friedman et Cale du label SPY Records. Le single de Marie et Les Garçons fut originellement publié sur SPY aux USA, tout comme quelques autres singles, tous produits par John Cale dont Harry Toledo, The Necessaries ; le pape de la culture rock : Lester Bangs, Model Citizens, et « l'éminence noire » de Bob Dylan : Bobby Neuwrith.

Cette aventure à quatre dura quelques mois, puis Zilkha et Esteban décidèrent de créer leur propre label ZE Records. Après l'explosion du punk et de la new wave à la fin des années 70, une nouvelle génération de musiciens « wanabee » souvent écrivains, peintres, réalisateurs et autres arnaqueurs de bas étage créèrent une scène de musique déviante qui rejetait les chemins traditionnels de l'industrie musicale. ZE leur fournit un cocon déjanté et un labo pour que cette tribu urbaine puisse explorer en toute impunité de nouveaux champs de perception...

Un an plus tard, Chris « Tycoon » Blackwell se joint à l'aventure et à travers un deal de licence avec son label Island Records, offre à ZE l'opportunité d'une exposition mondiale. ZE développa durant quelques années une identité indépendante et surréaliste dotée d'une ligne esthétique singulière, un univers chaotique, mais cohérent, refuge de toute la scène underground arty new-yorkaise composée de fortes personnalités. Pour certains, à cette époque, ZE Records était simplement « le meilleur label de musique indépendant du monde », dixit John Peel dans « Melody Maker » en 1980. Dans « The Face » de mars 1980 , Robert Elms écrivait « Le meilleur conseil qu'un jeune journaliste branché puisse vous donner aujourd'hui : SI C'EST SUR ZE, ACHETEZ-LE IMMÉDIATEMENT... », et dans le même magazine en janvier 82, Paul Tickell décrivait le label : « ZE records, le label le plus Hype du monde ». Le reste fait partie de l'histoire...

En l’espace de quelques années les meilleurs albums de Suicide, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Lydia Lunch, Alan Vega, James White/Chance, Cristina, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, Was (Not Was), pour ne citer que les plus connus, furent enregistrés sur ZE à la charnière des années 70/80 et ont influencé jusqu'à aujourd'hui grand nombre de groupes.

En 1982 Esteban quitta New York et ZE records pour d'autres aventures en solo De 1984 à 1989, il produisit le groupe français new wave transfuge de « Marquis de Sade », « Octobre », l'album sud-africain de Lizzy Mercier Descloux incluant, contre toute attente, le hit « Mais où Sont Passées Les Gazelles », et son suivant au Brésil « One For The Soul » avec Chet Baker. Puis deux albums avec Lio : « Pop Model » et « Cancan », incluant deux single d'or « Les Brunes Comptent Pas Pour Des Prunes » et « Fallait Pas Commencer » et un album d’or « Pop Model »...

Michael Zilkha arrêta ZE Records en 1984, après quelques années dans le pétrole, il est aujourd'hui à la tête de Zilkha Renewable Energy (Société qui fabrique de l'électricité avec du vent) Il siège au bureau de surveillance de la Chinquapin School, The Menil Collection, The Contemporary Arts Museum et The Alley Theatre, tous domiciliés à Houston, Texas, où il vit désormais...
En 2003, Esteban relança ZE records qui à ce jour a remasterisé et réédité plus d'une quarantaine d’albums produits depuis 1978. Il vit aujourd’hui à Bahia, au Brésil.

*Contrairement à ce que pourraient laisser penser les deux photos ci-dessus, Michael n’a jamais réellement appris à jouer de la guitare, et Michel n’a lui jamais compris ce qu’il y avait d’écrit dans Billboard Magazine...
